[RSS Feed/News] Can you help me please with a small piece of code for my gallery?

I am hoping that one of you very helpful and knowledgeable members can help me out with this. As per the image below I am wanting to put a very pale grey overlay over the information blocks (not sure of their correct name). I THINK this would be an overlay in the item list area, but as I know practically zero about codes I can't work it out. The image below is just a Photoshop mock set up that I did to show what I'm talking about.
