It would be nice to be able to personalize content based on forums the user is interested in.
For example, if the user is mostly participating in forum "Sports" and never visits forum "Cars", his What's new section should not display threads about the cars at all.
The similar concept is present when you first register to Quora and some news mobile apps. They ask what topics are you interested in. This info is used for displaying content based on your preferences.
