[RSS Feed/News] Server error log: Swift_TransportException: Email to [email] failed: Failed to authenticate on SMTP server with username "xxxxxx"

I've used AWS SES for notifications for XF for years and worked great. Lately I've noticed about 5 errors a day that look like this:

• Swift_TransportException: Email to [email protected] failed: Failed to authenticate on SMTP server with username "xxxxxxx" using 2 possible authenticators
• src/vendor/swiftmailer/swiftmailer/lib/classes/Swift/Transport/Esmtp/AuthHandler.php:181

The notifications work and emails work, but why is this error happening and how...
